In this study a method was developed for the isolation of wax and then its purification from filter press mud waste of sugar industry. Filter press mud samples were obtained from Pattoki sugar mills limited Pattoki, Punjab Pakistan (A) and Macca sugar mills limited chack-65 manga-raiwind road, Punjab Pakistan (B). Crude wax was obtained from sample ‘A’ and ‘B’ about 10.4% and 9.8% respectively, purified wax 4.2% and 3.4% from sample ‘A’ and ‘B’ respectively by using ethanol which was in agreement to the literature values. The physico-chemical-properties of filter press mud and purified hard wax were performed. Cream coloured and odourless wax was obtained after purification. The results regarding physico-chemical parameters of refined wax from sample ‘A’ and ‘B’ were determined by melting point 80.2oC and 79.8oC, saponification value 12.15mg/g and 16.13mg/g, iodine value 3.6mg/g and 3.9mg/g and acid value 8.9mg/g and 7.5mg/g respectively. Refined wax was characterized by gas chromatography flame ionization detector (GC-FID) to determined fatty acids profile which showed the presence of fatty acids up to C24, Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR) which indicated the presence of different functional groups and their related compounds as -OH, -CH, -CH2, -C-O, -C=O, UV/Visible spectroscopy showing λmax at 239nm and 236nm respectively for sample ‘A’ and ‘B’ which indicated the presence of conjugated dienes.
