Prevalence of Hydrocephalus in the Patients of Lahore General Hospital /Kanwar Shahnawaz - Lahore : Department of Zoology, Div. S&T University of Education, 2018 - 90 p. iv CD

Hydrocephalus is a neurological disorder where there is a fluid buildup in the brain. It is not a genetic disorder and can occur at any age. Production and absorption difference between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) resulting into increased size of the cerebral ventricles. For studying the prevalence of Hydrocephalus, General Hospital, Lahore was selected for data collection. A questionnaire was designed to get the information about patient’s name, gender, age, cast, family history and presence of risk factors that include Meningitis, Diabetes mellitus (DM), Head trauma, Genetic abnormality, Central nervous system (CNS) tumor and Hypertension. In the collected data, there were 74 males and 42 females out of total 116 Hydrocephalus disease patients. This study shows prevalence of Hydrocephalus is higher among men (63.79%) as compared to women (36.20%). In case of age groups, 21-30 years group shows maximum prevalence as 27.5%. Out of the total, 40 patients suffered from congenital showing the prevalence of 34.4% and 76 were acquired showing the prevalence of 65.5%. In risk factors, Central Nervous System (CNS) Tumor shows greatest prevalence i.e. 60.3%. The patients belonging to Lahore show highest prevalence i.e. 35.34%.Among all the casts, the maximum number of patients were present in Rajpoot and Arain cast i.e., 14.65%. This study will help in Hydrocephalus management. This will improve the lives of patients suffering from hydrocephalus by determining the causes and risk factors. It will help to adopt precautions and to improve treatment of this disease by studying parameters causing this disease.
