Summary: Many industries in Kasur, a city of Punjab, discharge their effluents directly or indirectly into rivers, stream, canals etc. HAJJI BOOTA tannery is an example of this trend. In the present study, effluents from this industry was analyzed for different Physio-chemical parameters such as acidity, temperature, pH, alkalinity, hardness, free CO2, total solid matter, BOD and COD. Effluents from lather Industry was found discharged directly into the stream. The contaminated stream water has been used to irrigate the agricultural fields. There was no more difference in most of the parameters between concentrate and dilute effluents because of the low dilution rate. Similarly, physico-chemical characters of plants of four different varieties of canola were analyzed and the parameters were found comparatively lower in irrigated plants with contaminated water than that of irrigated plants with uncontaminated water. In the present work the effluent’s effect on germination of seeds, growth seedling, weight of fresh as well as of dry seedling samples of four different varieties of canola plant (Oscar, Rainbow, Dunkald, Shiralee) were assessed. It was found that effluents showed both inhibitory as well as stimulatory effects. Howe ever the inhibitory effects are more prominent as compare to stimulatory ones. The degree of stimulation and inhibition depended upon the type of the seed and concentrations of effluents. It was found that the growth of roots was highly affected as compare to growth of shoots. Thus roots of the tested crops were highly sensitive to effluent treatment than shoots. The relative degree of toxicity showed that Oscar was highly susceptible to effluents treatment and rainbow was relatively more resistant. Moreover, it was also found that the crop productivity of plants irrigated with effluents contaminated water was relatively low than that irrigated with uncontaminated water. Form the experimental work it was concluded that all most all the physio-chemical parameters of effluents from HAJI BOOTA tannery, were quite high due to which this effulents is not suitable for irrigation of crops even after 50% dilution with normal water.
