The synthesis of 1,2-diphenylethane-1,2-dione known as benzil and its derivatives thiohydantoin has been conducted. The compound was synthesized by stirring with benzoin and nitric acid in the presence of basic media. Required compound, which was synthesized, characterized by IR spectroscopy. Its transition metal complexes were synthesized by refluxing this compound with transition metal salts like ZnCl2 in the presence of methanol acting as a solvent. The complexes were characterized by IR spectroscopy. The biological activity of synthesized compounds was studied. Compound (9) showed maximum anti-microbial activity. While compound (5) showed minimum anti-microbial activity.
