Accompanying material | Cadmium (Cd) a toxic heavy metal is a modern pollutant associated with several industrial processes. Cadmium is absorbed in significant quantities from cigarette smoke, fossil fuel combustion, phosphate fertilizers, iron, steel, cement production, and municipal solid waste incineration and is known potential carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic through bioaccumulation in tissues by ingestion and inhalation, targeting brain, liver, heart, kidneys, lungs, bones and vascular systems. Aims of present study are to analyze various developmental abnormalities by sub-lethal dose of Cadmium chloride and protective role of Garlic (Allium sativum), to minimize the intensities of these toxicities. Chick embryo was selected as the model organism. For this purpose, fertilized eggs of Gallus domesticus were randomly divided into four different groups and incubated at ±37°C. Group I was intact control (untreated). On 7th day of incubation, eggs of Group II were injected with a sub-lethal dose of Cadmium chloride (CdCl21.5 µg /0.05 ml/egg) in albumin. In group III, eggs were treated with Cadmium chloride and fresh garlic juice (CdCl2 1.5µg/0.05ml/egg + 2µg Garlic juice/0.05ml/egg), one after the other between short intervals of 10 minutes. Group IV was injected with fresh garlic juice (2µg garlic juice/0.05 ml/egg). Experiment was continued till 21st day of incubation for natural hatching and remaining embryos were recovered at 23rd day of incubation. Two days old chicks were decapitated; organs and embryos were fixed in Bouin’s fluid, and further processed for morphological, morphometric and histological analysis. Cadmium chloride induced significant developmental abnormalities such as reduced body weight, exencephaly, crooked toes, crossed beak, limbus, kyphosis, gastroschisis and severe histopathological anomalies in liver and heart tissues.
