Higher education enrollment trends and job opportunities: Comparison between prospects and realities in Pakistan

<br/><br/> This research aims to explore the trend of enrollment in higher education and<br/>their corresponding job opportunities in Pakistan. The research was quantitative in<br/>nature and based on enrollment data (2012-17) from 27 universities, job<br/>advertisement data (2012-17) from four newspapers, students’ perceptions of their<br/>future job and students’ employment data. The multistage, stratified, purposive, and<br/>random sampling techniques were used to collect the data from different sections of<br/>the population. Descriptive as well as the inferential statistics was used for the<br/>analysis of the data. The results showed that the higher enrollment trend was in the<br/>subjects of Natural Sciences. Similarly, the majority of jobs were advertised for the<br/>field of Natural Sciences and fewer for the Social Sciences. There was no relationship<br/>found between the fields of study and job advertisements. On the other hand, the<br/>students’ perceived jobs were not relevant to their areas of study and on-job graduates<br/>were not working in the areas of their specialization.
